Monday's Class

October 6, 2009
Today at my Monday magic class I taught the 11 students Pick One, The Amazing Two String Trick and The Compass That Doesn’t Point North. They had a great time seeing the tricks as usual. =)
One student figured out the workings of Pick One as soon as I talked about the circles each having a secret number. His mind raced ahead to the next steps and it was very impressive! The other kids had fun fooling each other with it.
For the Two String Trick one boy had seen it before in a magic kit but could only do it once since he didn’t understand the reset! This is one trick the steps need to be broken down so we all did each step together. It is a cool one when they get it.
The Compass trick went well overall. This is a good one since most have seen Pirates of the Caribbean and know about Jack Sparrow's compass. After I handed the compasses out  one student asked what was magical about it. This is a question I get sometimes for tricks when A) I haven’t performed it well to start with and the effect is not clear or B) Once they get it in their hands and see it up close it just seems so simple that it loses the “magic.” This is what I try to talk about on the first day of class, that once you know the secret the magic disappears and why magicians don’t tell their secrets. With that student I demonstrated again how it keeps pointing different ways and you have t find the way to make both sides point the same direction. That helped get the magic back.
A fun day that went by fast!
